Coaching Spotlight: Jon Embree, University of Colorado Buffaloes

Jon Embree returned to the University of Colorado in 2011 to coach for the Buffaloes. He had played for them in the 1980s as a tight end and, in the 1990s, he became an assistant coach.

After graduation from University of Colorado, Embree joined the Los Angeles Rams, but after two years, he joined the Seattle Seahawks, but was injured quickly afterwards. Giving up his career as a professional football player, Embree entered television broadcasting, but became an assistant coach at Colorado in 1991. Since then, he has coached at UCLA and for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Washington Redskins.

Embree is the first African American coach for the University of Colorado, fourth in PAC-12, and only the third coach to have graduated from the University of Colorado. The other two coached only one year each, one in 1962, the other in 1894.
