I'm Thankful for the Pac 12!

As Thanksgiving is coming up, I can't help but to think of all the things I'm thankful for. And after family, friends and my health, obviously the Pac 12 are at the top of the list! I will always be thankful for the Pac 12!

Pac-12 Basketball Schedule

The Pac 12 Basketball Tournament schedule is as follows:

First Round: Wednesday, March 7

Noon: No. 8 Washington State vs. No. 9 Oregon State

2:30 p.m.: No. 5 UCLA vs. No. 12 USC
6 p.m.: No. 7 Stanford vs. No. 10 Arizona State
8:30 p.m.: No. 6 Colorado vs. No. 11 Utah

Second Round: Thursday, March 8
12 p.m.: No. 1 Washington vs. Oregon State/Washington State winner
2:30 p.m.: No. 4 Arizona vs. UCLA/USC winner
6 p.m.: No. 2 Cal vs. Stanford/Arizona State winner
8:30 p.m.: No. 3 Oregon vs. Colorado/Utah winner

Semifinals: Friday, March 9
6 p.m. - Semifinal #1: Winners of early Thursday games
8:30 p.m. - Semifinal #2: Winners of evening Thursday games

Championship: Saturday, March 10
3 p.m. - Championship Game

Pac 12 Tournament

If the Pac-12 tournament goes as expected, either Wash, Cali or Arizona will cut down the nets after Saturday's championship game. Then, those three teams will make the NCAA Tournament field of 68.

However, assuming the Pac-12 will go is planned is a big one. It probably won't happen. The Pac-12 has been filled with parity from the start, and chances are it will finish that way.

As it stands, it appears as though Arizona should be able to further secure an at-large bid by defeating ASU and winning at least one game in the conference tournament.

But if any team not named Washington, California or Arizona wins the Pac-12 tourney and earns an automatic bid to the big dance, that all changes of course.

Pac 12 Could Only Send One Team To Dance

Given the six power conferences' built-in advantages over the rest of college basketball, it seems hard to believe that any would have only one team in the NCAA Tournament.

Since 1980, when the field expanded to 48 teams and conferences were allowed more than two representative, none of the six have ever sent only one team. The Pac 12 may just make history.

The conference leader, California, is really the only team on pace for an at-large bid. Co-leaders Washington and Arizona are close to at-large territory. This disaster really stems from the conference's lousy non-conference results, which sank Pac 12 teams' ratings percentage index numbers.

Pac 12 Conference Rankings

Like I was saying... the Pac 12 race is really heating up. Here are the current rankings and some notes:

1. Washington - you surely can't knock the improvement Washington has made throughout the year. If things keep going this way, despite the team's mediocre tourney profile, Romar's team will be in excellent position heading into the all-important Pac 12 tournament.

2. California - the Bears had spent the entire season leading the pack as the most solid team. That perception hasn't necessarily changed, despite their recent drop out of first. The Bears are solid, but aren't spectacular.

3. Colorado - the Buffaloes are playing some solid defense, picking up some nice wins, but I hardly expect the Buffaloes to finish anything better than third or fourth.

4. Arizona - the Wildcats have moved up very quickly this week thanks to their impressive sweep of the Bay Area. The Wildcats are now 7-4 in conference play.

5. Oregon - the Ducks have really failed to impress when it comes to league play.

6. Stanford - with the Cardinals sitting at 6-5 and having allowed the fifth-most points per possession in Pac-12 play, I'm not sure if there is too much else to say.

At this point you have probably stopped reading... but I wholeheartedly thank you if you haven't!

UCLA: the 'Why' Behind the Ranking

UCLA is undoubtedly going to have a harder year this year than in the past. If Josh Smith steps up his game and freshman guard Normal Powell keeps improving, the year could be eased. However, if you look at the Bruins' roster, it looks alarmingly light on anything good.

UCLA will have to really, really work to get #5.

Washington: the 'Why' Behind the Ranking

The Huskies have the potential for a quick start because of an easy schedule early on. Plus, Washington is known for their history of turning around struggles. Though Washington is slightly weak on the inside game, I think they will pull out some magic this season.

Washington will come in at #4.

Arizona: the 'Why' Behind the Ranking

My reasoning for ranking Arizona #3 in my hoops race article:

The Arizona Wildcats are a bit undersized, but have a decent overall unit. Arizona should get better as freshmen Nick johnson, Josiah Turner and Angelo Chol get better. If nothing else, the Wildcats have always enjoyed a nice home court advantage.

Arizona fits at #3.

Stanford: the 'Why' Behind the Ranking

It looks to me as though Johnny Dawkins has something good going on in Palo Alto. The Cardinals have a big rebounding margin and, if they get Dwight Powell playing well, they should be a handful for any opponent.

Stanford is strong, coming in at #2.

Cal: the 'Why' Behind the Ranking

In my last post I ranked where I thought the Pac 12 basketball teams would finish in the hoops race. I had ranked the Cal Bears at the top. Here's why:

The Bears had a solid preseason and they've got a lot of proven commodities. Cal also probably has the best bench in Mike Montgomery.
